BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB has won US FDA approval for the treatment of mild-to-moderate hypertension with Monopril (fosinopril sodium), the first drug in a new chemical class of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
The phosphinic acid derivative differs from other ACE inhibitors as the active compound is eliminated from the body via two balanced routes involving both the kidneys and liver. This should benefit older hypertensive patients. Most ACE inhibitors on the market are eliminated primarily by the kidneys.
The drug will be co-promoted by Boehringer Ingelheim.
*Exclusive worldwide rights to Anagrelide, Bristol-Myers Squibb's late stage anti-cancer drug have been won in principle by Roberts Pharmaceutical. The drug is in Phase III trials in North America and Europe.
