BP Chemicals and Asahi Chemical have entered into an agreement with the China Petrochemical International Co (Sinopec International) to license acrylonitrile technology for two production plants in China.

The 50 000 tonne/year plants, to be located in Jinling and Jingmen, are expected to begin operation by 1998.

In addition, Sinopec will be free to design, construct and operate acrylonitrile plants in China with annual individual capacity of not more than 50 000 tonne using the BP acrylonitrile process.

Asahi Chemical of Japan began producing acrylonitrile in the early 1960s using BP's process, and is now Asia's largest producer.

Asahi has conducted extensive research and development activities in acrylonitrile, a part of which was granted back to BP Chemicals.
