FCFC forced to shut ABS plant

FORMOSA Chemicals and Fibres Corp (FCFC) has been forced to shut down its 150 000 tonne/year ABS plant in Taiwan following complaints from local residents over emissions. The facility had been onstream only one month and will now be out of action for two months.

However, market rumours that CPGC had also shut down ABS and PS capacity because of environmental complaints have been dispelled by the Taiwanese producer. Production of high impact PS has been reduced because of poor market conditions, a source told ACN, but ABS production is still running normally.

FCFC halted ABS production between 18 and 22 July, a spokesman said. Problems arose when engineers tried to deal with a mechanical fault following startup. Accidental emissions prompted complaints of unpleasant smells from residents. Now FCFC is upgrading its venting system to ensure emissions are incinerated, the spokesman said.
