FORMOSA Chemical and Fibre Corp has selected ABB Lummus Global to supply technology and basic engineering design for its new cumene-phenol-acetone unit, which will have an expanded capacity of 270 000 tonne/year of cumene, 200 000 tonne/year of phenol and 120 000 tonne/year of acetone.

The unit, to be built as part of Formosa Plastic Corp's US$9.4bn petrochemical complex, is expected to come onstream in 1999. Almost all of the phenol and acetone will be directed to sister company, Nan Ya Plastics, for the production of bisphenol A, while the remainder will be sold.
