THOR CHEMICAL HOLDINGS has announced its intention to appeal against the London High Court ruling allowing a civil action in the UK on behalf of Thor SA workers' relatives and one surviving Thor worker (ECN 1 May).

London solicitor Richard Meeran is representing Anastasia Cele, Busisiwe Ngcobo (whose husbands died of alleged mercury poisoning) and Albert Dlamini who has survived alleged mercury poisoning at Thor Chemicals in Cato Ridge, South Africa.

Des Cowley, Thor Chemical Holdings UK managing director, said the appeal would centre on the need to conduct the case in South Africa. 'All the people involved are there, all the witnesses, and that is where everything took place. We feel this [London action] to be a colossal waste of money.'
