Hoechst unveils new veterinary antibiotic

HOECHST'S ANIMAL health subsidiary, Hoechst Veterinär, has developed a new antibiotic called Cefquinom which it says will significantly improve treatment of bacterial respiratory infections in cattle. The company said it is the first time the active ingredient, a fourth generation cephalosporin, has been used in veterinary medicine.

* The German pharmaceutical registration agency has given its reasons for rejecting an application by Hoechst's subsidiary Behringwerke for its multiple sclerosis drug based on 15-deoxyspergualin (ECN 1 May). The agency said the drug did not prove to have sufficient therapeutic effect. Behringwerke said it considers data from clinical trials 'positive enough' to warrant registration.
