HOECHST'S ANIMAL health subsidiary, Hoechst Veterinär, has developed a new antibiotic called Cefquinom which it says will significantly improve treatment of bacterial respiratory infections in cattle. The company said it is the first time the active ingredient, a fourth generation cephalosporin, has been used in veterinary medicine.

The agency said the drug did not prove to have sufficient therapeutic effect. Behringwerke said it considers data from clinical trials 'positive enough' to warrant registration.
