HARLOW CHEMICAL, jointly owned by Yule Catto and Hoechst, is expanding polyvinyl alcohol production at Harlow in Essex, both through expansion of its existing facility and through relocation of plant from Germany to Essex.
Harlow is said to have an important niche in the PVOH market supplying alcohol/water solutions to the PVC market. Competitors suggest that the transfer of plant to the UK is the result of the German authorities' refusal to permit further expansion of Hoechst's PVOH production at Frankfurt.
* Mowlem has been awarded the design and manage contract at Harlow and also a £4.5m ($7.1m) contract with Associated Octel at its Amlwch site in Anglesey comprising the installation of a multi-product bromination facility.
