MELAMINE CHEMICALS is to construct a 30 000 tonne/year melamine plant near Memphis, Tennessee, using the company's patented M-II technology (ECN 19 June). The cost of investment of this plant is put at $40m.
The company has also signed two letters of intent related to the proposed construction.
The first was signed with an unnamed US corporation seeking a long-term supply of melamine crystal. The letter of intent outlines a contract covering a large portion of the proposed plant's output. The second was signed with Arcadian Corp, providing a long-term customer for a portion of its Memphis-based urea production. It covers an agreement under which Melamine Chemicals would receive all of the new plant's raw material requirements from a single source on a cost-plus basis.
Preliminary engineering is scheduled to start at the end of this year and Melamine Chemicals is currently deciding on a contractor for the whole project.
