HÜLS IS expanding capacity at Marl, Germany, for butylphenol and dibutylphenol, adding 10 000 tonne/year to take total capacity to 32 000 tonne/year. Exact timing for construction of the expansion has not been decided.
The company claims market leadership for these products in Europe and says the move is in response to growing market demand, notably in production of stabilisers and anti-oxidants for the coatings and plastics industries. Increasing high tech polymer use is also stepping up demand.
Hüls is integrated in phenol and isobutene, the two raw materials for the phenol derivatives.
Its subsidiary Phenolchemie operates a large phenol unit at Gladbeck, and recently obtained board approval to double capacity for phenol at its Antwerp unit, taking output from 200 000 tonne/year to 400 000 tonne/year by mid-1997.
