Jacobs wins methanol design contract

JACOBS ENGINEERING has been awarded the process and detail design contract for the 2500 tonne/day (825 000 tonne/year) methanol furnace being built in Saudi Arabia for Sabic subsidiary Saudi Methanol Company (Ar-Razi-III). Jacobs will use its H&G steam reforming technology on the project.

Total installed cost of the project - due for completion by Q4 1996 - is around $180m.

Jacobs will work on the project with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, the main engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

Jacobs is also involved with the process designs for Qafac's 2500 tonne/day methanol unit in Qatar, to be built with a 1800 tonne/day MTBE unit. Tenders for the lump-sum, turnkey construction contract are expected to be released in September.

Given its experience Jacobs says it is confident of making the bid list and to win at least the mechanical design of the furnace.
