Dow lifts temperature tolerance of PC resins

DOW HAS increased the temperature performance of its polycarbonate thermoplastic by developing a copolymer based on bisphenol A and bishydroxyphenyl fluorene (BHPF), a fluorenyl derivative. The materials - available early next year - will be produced at Dow's Freeport, Texas, site. The key to the development has been a breakthrough in the cost of production of BHPF.
Dow is marketing the new materials under the Inspire brandname, with the first three grades offering glass transition temperatures of 170¡C, 190¡C and 220¡C. The new family of resins should find uses in aerospace, automotive, appliance/housewares and HVAC and medical markets.
