Wacker-Chemie is to expand polycrystalline hyperpure silicon capacity at its Burghausen site in Germany. Capacity will be increased to 5000 tonne/year and is to come onstream by 2000. The expansion is to meet increasing demand for hyperpure silicon wafers in the microelectronics market. A few months ago, Wacker announced plans to invest $84.6m in silicon production at its Freiberg site (ECN 9 October).
