LAROCHE INDUSTRIES' board of directors has approved an expansion at its ammonia manufacturing facility in Cherokee, Alabama, US.

The plant's present capacity of 175 000 tonne/year will be increased by 40% to 245 000 tonne/year. Investment costs are $13m.

The announcement is the third phase in expansion plans for the Cherokee site; phase 1 began in September 1994. Phase III construction will commence in the H2 1996 to start up by mid-1997.

Ammonia produced will be used to feed the company's ammonium nitrate and urea ammonium nitrate at the Cherokee site. It will also supply other internal requirements.
