Solvay has expanded its human health division through the acquisition of Canadian lactulose liquid producer Canlac. Bought for an undisclosed fee from Häagen-Dazs ice cream maker Ault Foods, Canlac will operate under Solvay's Canadian arm, Solvay Kingswood.

Canlac produces 4000 tonne/year of lactulose liquid with sales of $100m/year. Lactulose is Solvay's third largest pharma product. It is used to treat constipation and hepatic coma and is sold under the brand name Duphalac.

With its unit at Weesp in the Netherlands already at full production capacity, Solvay is looking to use the new production at Canlac as a means of bolstering its global supply.

In addition to the extra lactulose capacity, Solvay also gains access to new technology which uses whey permeate as a starting material for lactulose. The whey permeate will be supplied by Lactantia, a subsidiary of Ault Foods, which is situated on the same site as the Canlac plant.
