The first phase of India's first silicones project will be commissioned in November this year. The first phase, costing US$17.42m, involves the production of silicon polymers. The second phase, costing US$37.14m, will start the basic manufacture of silicones and expand product range. The project is being set up by Silicones Industries (India) Ltd (SIIL). Silicones technology, which is closely held by a few multinationals, is difficult to procure. SIIL, however, managed to convince dollar-starved Kremnij Polymer of Ukraine to part with its technology last year. The disintegration of the Soviet Union has resulted in marketing and liquidity problems, but Kremnij Polymer has since been able to establish itself in the international market, said SIIL sources.
