Shell Chemicals and BASF have chosen Moerdijk, the Netherlands, for their planned propylene oxide/styrene monomer plant (ECN 27 May).

The 50:50 joint venture is to be named Basell. The existing infrastructure at Moerdijk will limit overall project costs and was a key element in the choice of site, says Shell.

Shell Chemicals currently operates a 180 000 tonne/year propylene oxide and 380 000 tonne/year styrene plant at Moerdijk.

ABB Lummus Global has been selected as main contractor for the project which will have a capacity of 250 000 tonne/year propylene oxide and 550 000 tonne/year styrene.

Basic engineering work is under way on the plant, which will use Shell's proprietary technology.

The plant is expected to come onstream during the second quarter of 1999.
