JAPAN's Bridgestone has formed a joint venture to produce fibre-reinforced plastics compounds in Malaysia. The 3000 tonne/year plant at Bentong, Pahang, will start production in April 1997.

Bridgestone will hold 51% of the Yen250m (US$2.26m) Bridgestone Rei Komposit.

Local partner Rohas Euco Industries will hold 28% and DIC Polymer and Chemicals Asia, a subsidiary of Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, 21%.

The venture is targeting sales of Yen300m in its first year of operation and Yen600m in 2000.

The move is Bridgestone's first overseas production of the materials which were initially introduced at its Ishikawa prefecture plant in Japan as part of its efforts to diversify from tyre production.
