TPI to build ABS plant at Thai petchem facility

THAI Petrochemical Industry (TPI) is to build a 150 000 tonne/year ABS plant as part of its integrated petrochemical complex in Muang, Rayong, Thailand.

The US$120m plant is to start up at the end of 1998 and will be located next to the TPI's existing 80 000 tonne/year ABS plant.

The technology supplier and the engineering, procurement and construction contractor have yet to be selected.

Acrylonitrile will be sourced from the company's planned 150 000 tonne/year acrylonitrile facility due onstream in 1998-99. The joint-venture agreement is close to being signed. Asahi Chemical and a technology supplier are among the potential joint venture partners (ACN 5 Aug, p21).

Butadiene will come from TPI's crackers. The first cracker will produce 60 000 tonne/year and the second 120 000 tonne/year. The first cracker is expected onstream in early 1997 and the second in 1999. TPI currently imports its butadiene requirements.

Styrene will come from TPI's 200 000 tonne/year plant now under construction. The plant is expected onstream in early 1997.

Other Thai ABS producers are Bayer Premier Co (BPC) and Eternal Petrochemical. BPC recently started up its 46 000 tonne/year ABS and 25 000 tonne/year SAN facility in Mab Ta Phut (ACN 14 Oct, p25).

Eternal Petrochemical produces 10 000 tonne/year of ABS.
