Safco signs on Tecnimont for fertiliser

THE Saudi Arabian Fertiliser Co (Safco), an affliate of Sabic, has signed an agreement with Tecnimont of Italy to build two world-scale fertiliser plants in Saudi Arabia.

Tecnimont Arabia will build the plants, each producing 500 000 tonne/year of ammonia and 600 000 tonne/year of urea, at the Safco complex in Al-Jubail. The plants are expected to come onstream before end-1999.

Sabic said the project will raise the annual capacity of Safco's plants in Al-Jubail and Dammam to 1.2m tonne of ammonia and more than 1.5m tonne of urea.

It said the granular urea produced by the new plant would find promising markets in East Asia, Australia and the US, thus strengthening Sabic's position in the international fertiliser market.
