Cefic to advise on EU laws

The European Commission has invited Cefic to advise eastern European countries applying to join the European Union (EU) on how to modify their chemical safety and environmental legislation.

Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic are likely to be included in the first wave of EU expansions and must harmonise their legislation with EU law in order to be considered. It is not yet known how long they will be given to do so, however.

Cefic is investigating discrepancies, the costs and enforcement problems for each country in switching to EU regulations and the competitive position of each country's chemical industry. It will recommend priorities for action - including possible EU assistance - in March 1998, according to Cefic's regulatory affairs manager Frantisek Doktor.

The investigation will initially look at four EU directives and one regulation, identified by the 1995 White Paper to be of particular importance to the eastern European chemical industry.
