US agriculture secretary Dan Glickman has branded as 'unacceptable' and 'impracticable' the recent decision by the European Commission to introduce compulsory labelling of products containing or consisting of genetically modified organisms (ECN 23 June 1997 p5). Glickman told the European Union's agriculture commissioner Franz Fischler such labelling would involve segregating a bulk commodity and would be 'clearly trade-inhibiting'.
