Aggressive marketing accounted for much of the 3.4% average estimated increase in world pesticide sales in 1996, US and UK pesticide action groups said last week. Increased globalisation of trade put pressure on suppliers to up pesticide use to ensure western standards.

Market estimates indicate 1996 was the third consecutive year of global growth. The British Agrochemical Association (BAA) reported a 3.6% rise in sales to about $31.25bn while German industrial association IVA estimated a 4.4% rise and US consultancy Alan Woodburn Associates claimed a 2.2% rise in the US.

The US-based Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA), says reports attribute the growth to more coarse grains, wheat and soyabeans being planted.
