SIAM Mitsui is considering building a second, 500 000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in Thailand. A decision will be made in the next two years.

'There is little demand now. If we decide on it, the project should start up in the later part of 2000,' a Siam Mitsui project manager said. He affirmed there is no financial worry.

The first, 350 000 tonne/year plant, sited in Mab Ta Phut, Rayong, will start up in Q3 1998. Siam Mitsui is a 50:50 joint venture of Cementhai Chemicals, which is the petrochemical arm of Siam Cement, and Mitsui Petrochemical.

The expansion will push ahead the Japanese company's goal of building two or three PTA plants in Asia by around 2005 (ACN 15 May 1995, p21).

Tuntex's 900 000 tonne/year PTA project in Thailand is under review following the Thai financial crisis. If it goes ahead, Siam Mitsui doubts it will be a rival as the two companies have separate customers.
