Elf Atochem, Allied Signal refrigerants pact

LONDON (CNI)--Elf Atochem and Allied Signal have reached an agreement for the manufacture and marketing of refrigerant blends for use as CFC substitutes in refrigeration and air-conditioning applications.

Allied Signal will manufacture and market R-409A (Forane FX56) for use as an R-12 substitute in existing medium temperature refrigeration systems. The refrigeration capacity of R-409A is 5-15% higher than R-12, for a 10-20% smaller refrigerant charge, said the two companies. Allied Signal will also market R-408A (Forane FX 10), an R-502 substitute particularly suitable for existing commercial and industrial low temperature refrigeration equipment. This fluid is proving up to 8% more energy efficient than R-502, the companies said.

Elf Atochem will market R-410A (AZ-20). A replacement for R-22, this product can be used to improve the energy efficiency of the latest air-conditioning equipment which is designed to run on higher pressure refrigerants. R-410A also provides enhanced performance in reversible systems (hot mode in winter/cold in summer), the companies claimed.
