Indian Ocean Fertilisers is expanding phosphoric acid and granular fertilisers in South Africa.

Indian Ocean Fertilisers (IOF), a South African manufacturer of phosphoric acid and granular fertilisers, is investing Rand600m ($124m) to expand production at its facility in Richards Bay. Once completed, output will be increased by about 80%.

The existing plant produces more than 75 000 tonne/year of phosphoric acid and more than 500 000 tonne/year of granular fertiliser. The project is currently subject to the outcome of an environmental impact assessment, with work expected to start early in 1999, and commissioning at the end of 2000.

* Copebras and Albright & Wilson have signed a letter of intent to form a Brazilian-based joint venture to supply the growing phosphates markets in Chile and the Mercosur trading block.

The 50:50 joint venture will build a technical phosphates plant with a capacity of 90 000 tonne/year at a cost of $15m.

The plant will be located at Copebras' existing facilities in Cubatao, Brazil, with Albright & Wilson providing technology and Copebras supplying phosphate rock and green phosphoric acid.

The joint venture is to be finalised in early 1998, with the plant set to startup at the end of the same year.

The partnership also plans to build a purified wet phosphoric acid plant and facilities for the production of other phosphate derivative products.
