Paris-based Foster Wheeler France has won a contract from Borealis to expand the company's ethylene plant at Stenungsund, Sweden, from 400 000 to 610 000 tonne/year capacity. Work on the $200m project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Foster Wheeler will be responsible for project engineering which includes the detailed design of two 100 000 tonne/year ethylene furnaces and related hot section. The technology and basic design have been provided by Stone & Webster including its Advanced Recovery System and USC M-coil furnace technology. The expansion will be able to use an ethane feedstock.

  • Exxon Chemical France is revamping two furnaces on its steamcracker at Notre-Dame-de-Gravenchon, Normandy, using Exxon's latest technology, including its highly selective cracking coils.

Work will be carried out in the fourth quarter of 1998 on the 400 000 tonne/year ethylene plant, with Birwelco appointed as the contractor. The improvements will increase feedstock flexibility and coproduct availability.
