LONDON (CNI)--Hoechst Marion Roussel has opened its new $45m drug innovation facility at Bridgewater, New Jersey, US, it announced Tuesday.

The new building can accommodate up to 200 researchers working on lead generation for new drugs. It doubles HMR's research capacity in Bridgewater.

Frank Douglas, executive vice-president for drug innovation and approval, said the new building was an important milestone. "It signifies our commitment to creating world-class lead generation capabilities and supports our goal to reduce the time needed to get novel medicines to market, from today's industry average of 10-15 years, to six to nine years. Beginning in 1999, we want to achieve at least two significant, new chemical entity, new drug approvals per year."

HMR also has 210 researchers working on lead generation in Romainville, France and 325 in Frankfurt, Germany. The Bridgewater site is dedicated to central nervous systems, oncology and respiratory disease products, while Romainville researchers work on infectious diseases and bone diseases. The German researchers concentrate on cardiovascular, metabolic and rheumatology products.
