Elf Atochem unit to expand NH3, urea output

LONDON (CNI)--Grande Paroisse, the fertilisers subsidiary of French chemicals company Elf Atochem, announced plans Thursday to expand ammonia (NH₃), urea and nitric acid production at its Toulouse, southwest France site.

It will spend about FF160m ($26.2m) to boost both ammonia and urea production capacity by around 5000 tonne/year. Current capacity for each product is 320 000 tonne/year, an Elf Atochem spokeswoman told CNI.

Grand Paroisse, which was unable to provide details of the nitric acid capacity increase, said the expansion programme would be completed in the second half of 2000. The additional nitric acid capacity will supply the nearby fine chemicals plant of France's state-owned SNPE.

Elf Atochem said Grand Paroisse is the leading supplier of fertilisers in France and third largest in Europe.
