LONDON (CNI)--The European Commission has launched an initiative to improve the competitiveness of the recycling industry.

Its proposal highlights the growing cost of collecting and processing waste, and the lack of preference for recyclable materials, compounded by the lack of relevant industrial standards.

To address these problems the Commission is proposing a series of actions, including:

  • Improving the market position of secondary raw materials through standardisation
  • Enhancing market transparency by creating exchanges for recyclables and increasing awareness, for example through the use of eco-labelling schemes
  • Using the Fifth European Framework Programme for Research and Development to concentrate on innovation.

The Commission intends to assess the feasibility of new legislation aimed at stimulating recycling, it said Friday.
