HOUSTON (CNI)--Millennium Inorganic Chemicals said Wednesday that it will shut down for five weeks its Stallingborough, UK titanium dioxide (TiO2) facility as part of an expansion plan, effective 6 September.

The expansion of the facility to 150 000 tonne is set for full start-up on 1 January.

The Hunt Valley, Maryland company emphasised that construction and start-up are running on schedule and on budget.

In preparation for the extended shutdown, Millennium said "the building of finished product inventory has been accomplished to assure no interruption of supply to Millennium's European customers."

"We have brought in product from our other production facilities to fulfil all customer orders so that service levels will remain constant across the board," said Stuart Esler, director of European sales and marketing.

Millennium Inorganic Chemicals is the world's largest second producer of TiO2. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Millennium Chemicals of Red Bank, New Jersey.
