LONDON (CNI)--BP is in talks with Nippon Gohsei that could lead to the Japanese giant building its planned Soarnol ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) compounding unit in Hull, northeast England, CNI was told Monday.

Gohsei's interest in the site follows BP's plan to invest in new production facilities in Hull, a BP source said. BP's plans for Hull include building a vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant and extending its ethylene pipeline to the site. CNI was told the range of chemicals available at Hull would allow BP to offer Gohsei all the feedstock chemicals needed to produce EVOH.

The Japanese company is planning to build its first EVOH plant in Europe but has yet to find a suitable site. Gohsei wants the EVOH plant onstream by 2005 with an initial capacity of about 10 000 tonne/year. Its plan follows a similar move by competitor Kuraray, which started construction of its 10 000 tonne/year Eval EVOH plant in Antwerp, Belgium earlier this year.
