Stone & Webster designs BP C2 expansion

LONDON (CNI)--Engineering contractor Stone & Webster has confirmed that its proprietary technology will be used for BP Chemicals' KG ethylene plant expansion in Grangemouth, Scotland.

BP is expanding the cracker by 270 000 tonne/year to 720 000 tonne/year, raising the site's ethylene capacity to over 1m tonne/year by early 2001. The plant will be designed and constructed by an alliance involving BP, Stone & Webster, Mitsui Babcock Energy Services, Kvaerner, Luddon, William Hare, Watson Norrie and SSL.

The project will involve the installation of three new furnaces, two compressor houses and associated equipment, Stone & Webster revealed in a statement received Friday. In addition to proprietary ethylene technology, Stone and Webster will provide the KG project with detailed engineering, procurement and construction assistance services. The company is already working at Grangemouth in the final phase of expanding BP's G4 ethylene plant.
