HOUSTON (CNI)--Amoco Chemical said Wednesday it has successfully brought on stream a major expansion of its purified isophthalic acid (PIA) unit at Joliet, Illinois - bringing the company's total global PIA capacity to 350 000 tonne/year.

The Chicago, Illinois company also announced the successful completion and start-up of its new metaxylene (MX) unit at Texas City, Texas. That expansion brings Amoco's total annual MX capacity to 225 000 tonne/year.

But Amoco did not provide capacity figures before or after the expansions.

PIA is used in a variety of applications, including thermoset materials, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for container and fibre resins, engineering polymers, inks and adhesives. Metaxylene is the feedstock for PIA.

Noting that Amoco is the world's leading supplier of PIA and MX, Amoco's group vice president for chemicals, Rick McNeel, said: "These two projects affirm our commitment to strengthen two of our core products and support our customer's long term growth."
