LONDON (CNI)--BP Amoco said Wednesday it is to cut the number of jobs at its Grangemouth refining-to-petrochemicals complex in Scotland by about 400 over the next two years.
A company spokesman said the jobs will go from across the complex, including the chemicals operations, but further details were not available. The site currently employs about 2500 people, of which about 1300 are in chemicals.
He said the job cuts are part of the company's global efforts to reduce costs in the face of downturns in its three businesses: exploration, refining and petrochemicals.
"The global oil industry is currently facing its most difficult operating environment in recent times," BP Amoco said in a statement.
"While we hope to achieve the majority of jobs reductions through voluntary means, we cannot rule out the possibility of compulsory redundancies in some areas," it said.
Work on the Grangemouth chemical expansions will continue, it said, creating about 2500 construction jobs over the next three years.
