LONDON (CNI)--Finland's Kemira Agro plans to bring its joint venture fertiliser and animal feed supplements plant at Aqaba, Jordan onstream in April/June 2001, Frits Visser, business unit director of Agro Ventures, told CNI Friday.

Aqaba was chosen over Safi - the original proposed location - because it is located on the Red Sea and is therefore a better export location, he said.

The project, a 50:50 joint venture with Arab Potash Company, has been delayed slightly because the joint venture took longer than expected to set up, Visser explained. Kemira had planned to bring the plant onstream in 2000.

A final decision on the project is expected mid-April, and major construction work is due to begin about six months later, he said. The plant, which was originally estimated to cost $70m, will produce 150 000 tonne/year of potassium nitrate and 75 000 tonne/year of dicalcium phosphate using ion exchange technology licensed by Kemira Agro's Danish subsidiary.
