LONDON (CNI)--Dow Chemical announced Monday it will build new twin 30 000 tonne/year plants to produce its Drytech superabsorbent polymers.
Site evaluations are underway and should be completed in Q3. Depending on the chosen location, the first unit could be onstream by the end of 2000.
Dow said the timing of construction of the second unit would depend on market demand. It noted that Buna Sow Leuna Olefinverbund is building an acrylic acid plant at Boehlen, Germany, which will be onstream late 1999. Acrylic acid is a raw material for Drytech production
Ian Davenport, Dow's business director for global superabsorbent products, said: "Dow will complete the previously announced debottleneck of the Midland, Michigan plant during 1999. Projections of continued annual growth in demand require further capacity."
By the end of this year the company said it should have 80 000 tonne/year Drytech capacity in Midland and 40 000 tonne/year in Rheinmunster, Germany.
