HOUSTON (CNI)--Celanese said Friday it will begin later this month to retire, relocate or lay off some 100 salaried employees at its Celriver cellulose acetate filament plant at Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Dave Phillips, manager of human resources at the Celanese corporate offices in Charlotte, North Carolina, told CNI Friday that the 100 salaried employees would be separated from the Celriver plant over the course of a year.

He said: "We'll have a number of those individuals taking retirement, and others will be relocated to other Celanese jobs, so we will reduce the number of involuntary departures somewhat." Phillips could not say how many layoffs would be necessary after retirements and relocations are accounted for among the 100 employees.

The layoffs were necessary, said Phillips, after Celanese closed a portion of the Celriver plant in March in order to make the operation more economical and competitive. The 100 salaried employees affected account for some 40% of the salaried workers at that location, he said.

The 50-year-old Celriver plant at Rock Hill is located approximately 25 miles south of Charlotte.
