In a move to expand its operations outside of Europe and widen its specialty fertilizers business, the supervisory board of Kemira Oy has approved a á90 million ($93.3 million) investment in potassium nitrate and dicalcium phosphate production in Aqaba, Jordan. The new operation will be held by a joint venture between Kemira and the Arab Potash Company of Jordan. The parent companies expect to complete it in 2001.

Kemira says the joint venture will use ion exchange technology developed by its Danish subsidiary Kemira Agro. The new company is expected to produce 150,000 tons of potassium nitrate and 75,000 tons of dicalcium phosphate per year. It will market them through Kemira's global distribution network. Net sales for the new company are expected to reach á60 million.
