HOUSTON (CNI)--The market for erectile dysfunction (ED) therapies is expected to reach $4bn (Euro3.88bn) by 2008 in the seven major pharmaceutical markets, a consultancy predicted Monday.

In announcing Monday a new study of the worldwide market potential for ED treatments, Decision Resources of Waltham, Massachusetts said its research indicates that sales of ED medications will expand by as much as three-fold by that year.

Decision Resources said that some 90m men in the seven main markets - the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and Japan - will likely seek treatment for ED in 2008.

The firm said that while Pfizer's Viagra, which more than quadrupled the size of the ED market in just one year, "addresses nearly all of the needs of the ED patient population, opportunity does exist for new, fast-acting, oral pharmacotherapies with greater specificity and minimal side effects."

Those opportunities exist, said Decision Resources, in part because Viagra raised for many men the first real prospect of an effective treatment.

Decision Resources said Viagra "has revolutionised the ED treatment market by stimulating a dramatic rise in both the diagnosed and drug-treated populations of ED sufferers."

The consulting firm said its examination of the ED market includes an in-depth look at unmet treatment needs, current and emerging therapies, and market-specific sales forecasts.
