Bordeaux has a large number of speciality chemical producers, some of which are the product of work undertaken at the numerous R&D centres. Capsulis describes itself as a young, independent company developing applications in the area of microencapsulation. Its Spherulites technology was first discovered at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, a government laboratory.
The technology is currently marketed for encapsulation of active compounds for cosmetics, such as vitamins, moisturisers and haircare products. Capsulis has also licensed a product which it calls Virbac for use in dermatology products for veterinary purposes.
Rene Laversanne, chief executive officer of Capsulis, says the company is collaborating with a network of public laboratories to develop the technology for biological applications in the areas of encapsulation of antigens, gene therapy and drug delivery.
