Foster Wheeler awarded Pfizer plant contract

Foster Wheeler has won a contract from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for engineering and procurement services on a $300m new manufacturing facility at the US drug giant's existing site at Ringaskiddy in County Cork, Republic of Ireland.

Due for completion in 2000, the project includes construction of a new organic synthesis plant (OSP4), a finished goods building and all supporting services.

The value of the contract to Foster Wheeler Energy, which will be undertaking the work in association with Project Management of Cork, was not disclosed.

Foster Wheeler Energy said construction work on the OSP4 project is already under way.

The OSP4 facility, which is modelled closely on the existing OSP3 plant at Ringaskiddy, will produce primary bulk, batch pharmaceuticals products in a nominal reactor capacity of 150000 litre, said Foster Wheeler. It will be capable of manufacturing six lines of these projects simultaneously at full production scale, according to Foster Wheeler's project manager, Janice Crawford.

Products manufactured at the plant will be bulk active ingredients or drug substances, said Foster Wheeler, but it was unable to disclose the planned annual production capacity of OSP4. It said, however, that the facility will provide additional production capacity required to meet the increasing demand for Pfizer products, in particular the anti-impotence drug Viagra, the angina and hypertension treatment Norvasc, Zoloft for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder, and the antibiotic Zithromax.
