SINGAPORE (CNI)--Basell Eastern, a new 50:50 joint venture of Shell Eastern Petroleum and BASF Southeast Asia, will build a styrene monomer/propylene oxide (SM/PO) facility at Pulau Seraya, Jurong Island, for startup in H2 2002, Shell stated Thursday.

The planned, $500m (Euro472m) facility will produce 550 000 tonne/year of SM and 250 000 tonne/year of PO, using Shell's proprietary technology.

It will be located next to Shell's other SM/PO facility there, which produces 315 000 tonne/year of SM and 140 000 tonne/year of PO. Shell on 31 August took over the shares of partner Mitsubishi Chemical Corp in Seraya Chemicals, which operates the SM/PO facility.

Shell will use Basell's PO largely as feedstock in the manufacturing of propylene glycol and polyols. Shell is planning a 110 000 tonne/year polyols investment on Jurong Island.
