TiO2 demand to grow 4% in 2000 - report

LONDON (CNI)--Global consumption of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments is expected to grow by as much as 4% next year after two years of low or negative growth rates, according to a report* from TZ Minerals International (TZMI) on the titanium and zircon industries.

Demand for titanium feedstocks, which is primarily driven by demand for titanium dioxide pigments, is expected to grow strongly as pigment producers return to higher levels of output, the report said. In the second half of 1999, there are already tentative signs of an improvement in demand for titanium feedstocks.

Supplies of titanium feedstocks are expected to increase moderately, by about 2.2%, in 2000, according to TZMI.

Seen primarily as a lifestyle product, the titanium dioxide pigment industry is highly dependent on the performance of the global economy.

The report also noted that consumption of zircon as a source of zirconium chemicals is expected to increase. Zircon consumption is expected to grow by about 4.6% in 1999 and 2.5% in 2000.
