LONDON (CNI)--Anglo-American oil and chemicals giant BP Amoco announced Tuesday it is to sell and market the ethyl acetate production of US firm Solutia in the US and Canada, together with its own imports into the region.

Under the agreement, which takes effect on 1 October, both companies will retain ownership of their respective manufacturing plants. Financial details were not disclosed.

Solutia, which has no companion products for ethyl acetate, said more options will be available to the combined customer base when its ethyl acetate is marketed in conjunction with BP Amoco's solvents product line.

Nick Elmslie, BP Amoco business unit leader for solvents and industrial chemicals, said: "Customers will benefit from the combined marketing and technical expertise created by this marketing arrangement."

Solutia produces some 25 000 tonne/year of ethyl acetate in the US at plants in Springfield, Massachusetts (14 000 tonne/year) and Trenton Michigan (11 000 tonne/year).

BP Amoco is building a new 220 000 tonne/year ethyl acetate plant in Hull, England which is due onstream in 2001. This plant will replace existing production at Hull and Porto Marghera, Italy. The company currently produces some 145 000 tonne/year at Hull and markets some 55 000 tonne/year of ethyl acetate produced at EniChem plants in Porto Marghera.
