SAO PAULO (CNI)--Exxon will supply Brazil's Rio Polimeros with 100 000 tonne/year of polymer to keep future clients of the Rio de Janeiro chemical cracker from using its Argentine competitor, CNI learned Monday.
The polymers will start rolling into Rio de Janeiro in the second half of 2001, a Rio Polimeros official announced.
A Rio Polimeros executive admitted that the deal was designed to try to keep Brazilian plastics companies from buying raw materials from the Baia Blanca cracker in Argentina. Dow Chemical's Argentine project there is scheduled to start producing in early 2001, whereas, according to the Rio Polímeros source, the Rio plant will not likely start operating until 2003.
The supply deal is part of the Rio Plast programme, set up by the Rio de Janeiro government to attract plastics firms to the state.
