LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals giant BASF said Wednesday it has doubled polyetherol production at Antwerp, Belgium to 135 000 tonne/year from 65 000 tonne/year.

This brings BASF's total polyetherol output from its two European plants, in Antwerp and Schwarzheide, Germany to 215 000 tonne/year. BASF declined to reveal the cost of the expansion.

The Antwerp plant is supplied with propylene oxide (PO) by the BASF and Shell Chemicals joint venture Basell at Moerdijk, The Netherlands. Basell started up a new styrene and PO plant at Moerdijk a few weeks ago.

BASF subsidiary Elastogran uses polyetherols to produce polyurethane foams.
