Sisas forced to shut Feluy PA plant for 4-6 weeks

LONDON (CNI)--Sisas, Europe's largest producer of phthalic anhydride (PA), confirmed on Thursday that its plant at Feluy in Belgium will be shut until at least the middle of December following problems in the condensation section.

The 110 000 tonne/year capacity plant was closed on 15 November and Sisas informed its customers on Wednesday that repairs and overhaul of the unit will take an estimated four to six weeks.

Closure at Feluy comes less than three months since Sisas was forced to close its other Belgian plant, at Ostend, because of problems in the distillation column. The 100 000 tonne/year capacity Ostend plant was down for about a week. This plant is due for a partial shutdown for maintenance in December but this may be rescheduled because of the Feluy outage.

The Feluy shutdown has coincided with a glut of PA in Europe, according to market sources. Prices have been weakening rapidly but are likely to stabilise on news of the extended outage.
