By taking over Théramax, France's market leader, Merck said it will become 'a significant player' in the fast growing women's healthcare segment, which is a sector with annual sales of around $13bn.
The French group, which employs 485 people, anticipates sales of FF700m ($106.9m) in 1999. Théramax is expanding sales at 14%/year, which is in excess of market growth, said Merck. The company will retain its name, but will use its new parent's worldwide marketing network to extend its reach and to help international clinical development of new products. Merck expects synergies, especially in oncology.
