SINGAPORE (CNI)--Teijin Chemicals, Japan, aims to raise its global polycarbonate (PC) capacity to 600 000 tonne/year by 2005, CNI was told Thursday.

A company spokesman, who said Teijin now has installed capacity of 180 000 tonne/year (120 000 tonne/year in Matsuyama, western Japan, and 60 000 tonne/year in a new plant in Singapore), considers itself to be among the world's top suppliers of PC, especially optical-grade PC.

It is firming plans to invest in:

  • Raising Singapore capacity to 130 000 tonne/year by 2001, then to 200 000 tonne/year by 2005 - with the lion's share of output going to China and Taiwan.
  • A new 100 000 tonne/year PC plant in the US - another key, high-growth market - by 2003.
  • A new 180 000-200 000 tonne/year facility, in either China or India, by 2005.
