Reliance Completes PX Plant

Reliance Industries Ltd. has marked the completion of its Jamnagar petrochemicals complex at Gujarat, India, with the commissioning of the third lines of its 1.4-million-metric-ton-per-year paraxylene plant and its 600,000-metric-ton-per-year polypropylene plant. The new capacity makes RIL the world's third largest producer of paraxylene and its fifth largest producer of polypropylene.

Output from the PX plant is expected to supply consumption at RIL's PTA manufacturing facilities at its plants in Patalganga and Hazira. Currently, the company has an aggregate PTA capacity of 1 million metric tons per year. Polypropylene production will supply growing demand for the polymer, which has increased in India at a compounded annual rate of 20 percent during the past 10 years.

GTC Expands Aromatics

GTC Technology Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Foster Wheeler Company and a licenser of polyester intermediate technologies, has added several new technologies to its aromatics portfolio. In accordance with Indian Petrochemical Company Ltd. and Vadodara, India, GTC will market IPCL's aromatics technologies, which include selective toluene disproportionation (STDP), toluene methylation, xylene isomerization and transalkylation. IPCL expects to benefit from the accelerated introduction of its technologies by GTC.

"GTC now has the widest collection of toluene conversion technologies used to make paraxylene of any licenser in the world," says Pinti Wang, president and CEO of GTC. "This addition is one of the steps we have planned to broaden our technology base to encompass the polyester chain."
